Teacher Info

I am an experienced musician & tutor and I have been involved in music for the past 15 years. My lessons are focused around my students having fun, achieving progression, increasing in skill & technique, and most importantly – falling in love with their instrument!

I have been playing guitar and bass for 10-15 years, and have been playing in bands from the age of 13. Since then, I have had wonderful opportunities to be involved in playing in a wide variety of bands at Christian festivals, conferences and church services.

I have been teaching guitar & bass since 2016 when I started working with The Rock Project Berkshire. The Rock Project are an after school music club, who not only teach children and adults how to play musical instruments but also how to play as a band!

Not long after joining the team, I also started up my own private teaching business. From my experience with The Rock Project, and also with St Paul’s Church in Weston-super-Mare (where I headed up the development of young musicians for several years), the aim for all of my lessons is to have fun while learning. I long for my students to want to play their instruments just from the pure enjoyment they gain from doing so. I provide a relaxing and non-pressured environment, however, perhaps, the only pressure is to have fun!

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

  • I achieved a grade C in GCSE Music at secondary school – age 16, followed by a Triple Distinction National Diploma in Music Practise during 2 years at college – age 18
  • Over the years of 2011-2015, I headed up the musical worship of a large kids club at a national Christian festival called New Wine, which usually attracts 10,000-15,000 people. This involved being bandleader for the week during this event, as well as organising rehearsals, deciding song lists, sourcing band members and most importantly playing twice a day with the band during the 7-day event – morning session and evening session. We had around 500-600 children (aged 10-11) at this club, with over 100 adults as part of the team
  • During this same event one year, my band and I had the amazing opportunity to lead the musical worship of an afternoon event in the main venue, which was for the 2,000 children/parents across the whole site
  • I briefly mentioned previously about my experience of heading up the development of young musicians at St Paul’s Church in Weston-super-Mare. This was during the years of 2013-2016 and it kicked off my passion of how music can affect a person’s life in a hugely positive way. My role was to lead the rehearsals each week for a group of up to 10 teenagers, whose goal was to provide the musical worship for our church’s Sunday service once a month. These guys had never played as a band before, so seeing their growth week on week during the rehearsals, as well as seeing them play so well together at their monthly Sunday service, was incredible. This is why I decided to start teaching and hope to be an inspiration to all students I come across

“Jo has been teaching my boy for the last year and has been brilliant. She’s patient, really friendly and very reasonable price-wise. Even during the lockdown, Jo continued to teach him over Zoom. Can’t recommend her highly enough.”
