Teacher Info

Acquiring piano skills should be fantastic fun and rewarding – so I teach every aspect of piano playing, including both formal and informal piano, playing by ear, classical studies, composition, songwriting and music arrangement. My approach is friendly and intuitive, as everyone has different musical tastes and aims. In this way I aim to please all students, whatever their final object in learning. There’s certainly never a dull moment!

I can offer one to one, joint lessons or classroom teaching (fully qualified PGCE). My teaching style can conventionally go through grades and theory, or we can opt for pop and creative, the choice is entirely yours. Over the last 20 years I have taught all ages, levels and styles – the target always being fulfilment and musical development. I speak French, Arabic and some German, Spanish, Italian and a little Bengali as well as English of course! So hopefully you will be at your ease! I have safeguarding certificates, advanced DBS, PLI and my studio has the advantage of CCTV monitoring, so you will see that I take your safety and mine very seriously. Students may opt to learn on a Goetze grand piano or a Privia electronic piano keyboard, and there is also access in my home to a wide range of other keyboards and instruments if students are interested. Songwriting and composition is a particular interest. “Build a band” sessions and classroom music sessions are also available on enquiry. During these, students learn to work together and develop a joint project – one of the main joys of creative music.

My Musical Background: I am a creative musician with a wide variety of musical tastes and influences. I have a particular passion for Chopin and Debussy. By contrast, I thoroughly enjoy pop styles, in particular soul music, and am currently working in the open field of prog rock with some very well known artists. My last album “Refugee” for the band “Hookstick” was a venture to combine original soul, funk and other styles with modern pop, using virtuoso musicianship in a very light context. The album was released in 2017. I also write and play with the prog group “Fluance”. In addition, I write inventive soundtrack and neo-classical music.

In performance, I am an improviser and can add piano where required to drama activities and also to plays, theatre and pantomime. I can create songs to order for performance by adults or children. Music very much reads and translates the words of my compositions which are highly significant to me – I work mainly with current topics and themes. If you want to enjoy learning the piano, I urge you to get in touch, and am sure I can help you to achieve your goals in a friendly and sympathetic environment.
